Become a Houman

The Circle of Houmen

We are approx. 100 active volunteer “Houmen” – and we might as well say it as it is: We would like to be even more – and we would like to recruit good, competent scout friends to the Circle of Houmen.

A Houman is a scout who:

  • Is somewhere between 16 and 80 years old
  • Is a member of a WOSM or WAGGS recognized scout corps.
  • Has a Danish or international background
  • Is full of good ideas and finds solutions for most things
  • Loves to create great experiences for children, young people and adults
  • Takes part in the community and takes ownership of tasks
  • Puts a minimum of 7 days of work at the center annually

An ever evolving community

Right from the beginning in the early 70s, the Circle of Houmen has been under constant change and development.

Because even though we have pleasant traditions and a common frame of reference, the Circle of Houmen is defined by the Houmen who are active at present time – and that’s how it should be.

It may well be that the Circle of Houmen has been here for a long time – but we have certainly not come to a standstill…

The competence to dare

– the fellowship to succeed

As Houmen, we dare to oblige each other – to expect something from each other…

In the volunteer community at Houens Odde, we dare to have expectations of each other. When we promise to solve a task, we expect from each other that it will be solved. Just as we expect that if you need help to solve the task, you can be sure to get help. When the individual succeeds – the community succeeds.

We are aware, that as a volunteer sometimes you have plenty of time to do volunteer work – at other times less. It is completely natural.

That is why we aim to share the volunteer work amongst us, and why we aim to educate ourselves in different competence areas.

We believe in the combination of experience and new outlook

In The Circle of Houmen, we believe that the interaction between different age groups and experience levels is what creates good development and stable operations.

Regardless of whether you are 17 years old or 70 years old, there is someone in the Circle of Houmen who is roughly the same age as you.

It gives us a great starting point for doing cool scout work together – for the joy and benefit of the scouts visiting our centre – and also to the benefit of yourself.

Because it must be fun and developing to be a volunteer at Houens Odde.

What’s in it for me?

Well, that’s a fair question. As a Houman, you also get great experiences yourself. There is plenty of opportunity to learn new things and try your hand at all kinds of challenges – both practical, managerial and developmental – so that you constantly develop yourself and others. It’s just about what you want to try your hand at – and do what you’re passionate about.

“It’s 70 of my best friends gathered in one place…” – Janek Munk, Houman

Being a Houman gives access to a large network of skilled people. Here you find long-lasting friendships, a huge source of knowledge and inspiration in almost everything – and a good and strong community feeling.

The road to becoming a Houman

It’s actually quite easy to become part of the Circle of Houmen

01.

Sign up on the “I’m interested” contact form

If you would like to become a Houman volunteer at Houens Odde Scout Centre, you can start by filling out the “I’m interested” form.

As soon as possible, you will receive an email from our volunteer coordinator, who will tell you which upcoming events it is possible to participate in, and you will receive a link where you can register.

02.

Join an event and learn more

You will then participate in an event at Houens Odde, either in a Houman event or in a camp as a staff member.

Here you will be invited to a “camp leader’s interview”, where you will have the opportunity to hear more about Houens Odde and being a Houman.  Here you also have ample opportunity to get answers to your questions.

Two Houmen must vouch for you, before you can enroll as a Houman. That may sound a bit much, but those are usually pretty easy to find.

If you are still interested in becoming a Houman, you will be entered as Potential.

03.

Take part in the community

As a Potential, you must, in total, put in at least 1 week of work at Houens Odde. This includes an event with participants.

You must take part in a Houmen’s-walk, which is a guided tour around Houens Odde, where you hear about our history, traditions and, not least, good old stories.

In addition, you must participate in either the Houmen’s annual meeting in February, or the Houmen Educational Days (HUDD).

04.

Join an event and
learn more

You will be admitted into the circle of Houmen and recieve the symbol; the purple scarf.

The official admission will take place at our annual meeting or HUDD (our educational days).

It really isn’t harder than that 🙂

So, are you joining us?

If the above has caught your interest, contact The Circle of Houmen by filling out the “Im interested” form.
